zen bones...

OK, so why the zen bones thing?

About 20 years ago I stumbled upon a book called "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones". Being vegetarian - the "flesh" bit didn't grab me, but the short pithy Zen stories inside it, did.

Ever since then my web nick has been zenbones, my Hotmail, my Gmail address, you name it. It's kinda stuck.

Is the blog about Zen? Nope.

Relative Size of Geosocial Universe
Some surprises here! Skype at 590 million, sheesh! And Yahoo mail - so high too, why? Surely not because it’s better than GMail? Maybe just because it arrived earlier. Same as Hotmail.
Few others I’d like to have seen there, like, Plaxo, Orkut. Are they still relevant?

Percentage of Women in National Parliaments
Of all the countries in the world, only Rwanda and Sweden have a higher percentage of women in parliament than South Africa.
Nice to be on the right position on a world list for a change! The USA and UK have a pretty dismal gender bias for such “advanced” democracies!

What side of the road do you drive on?
Seeing this chart made me sit up and notice that my view of the world is really just that. My view. I had no idea some many countries drove on the right hand side.

Interesting statistic of the day
Take a click through to this infographic. Don’t you think it’s amazing that the USA has only 48 mobile phones per 100 people - compared to the UK at 84 or even Icelnad at 90 per 100! And Canada - only 37 phones per 100.
I really would have thought the US and Canada would be close to 100. Well, you learn something new everyday.

Did you Know 4.0

The Did you Know series has hit my inbox more than anything in the last few years. Some people are still circulating version 2.0 or version 3.0. I thought I’d push out a post to v 4.0 (even though it’s been around since Sep 2009, and we could be getting a new one soon.

Africa will soon be awash with bandwidth
Take a look at the thickness of the lines. The thin black line is the SAT3 undersea cable that South Africa has been reliant on for years. See how it’s dwarfed by the capacity of the new cables. Nice, nice, nice.
I have always maintained, that there are 3 things in life that there’s never enough of (or said another way - you’ll use all you get): money, parmesan cheese and bandwidth.
The WACS cable makes the funky new Seacom cable look skinny! Bring it on.
