Hand-made wooden iPad stands.
Funny thing is, after watching the video (click through to see) and seeing all the labour and care that was put into the product, I was more inclined to value the product more than $30. Initially, it’s easy to say, “30 dollars just for a piece of wood!” until you see the craft.
Perhaps it’s time for software developers and designers to be more transparent with their craft? Perhaps they’d be valued more?

iPad’s new headphone jack.
Interesting design issues for iPod 2. Great feature using the pogo pin from a waterproof point of view, but weird to have it on the edge like that.

Microsoft vs Apple: Who’s cool, who’s the giant?
I find it quite funny how the perceived positions of these two companies are starting to switch.
First up: Microsoft (the boring geeky corporate monolithic safe bet) sells a record breaking 8 Million Kinects over the holidays. Yep, they’re fast becoming a big gaming player.
Secondly: Apple ramps up it’s business offering, sells 17 million iPads and gnaws away at laptop and netbook sales, and overtakes Microsoft to being the most valuable tech company and the the 2nd most valuable company in America (nearly catching Exxon).

It’s going to be a long night… 9 hours! Sheesh, is the whole world online now and downloading this? I guess the servers at Cupertino are cooking, not to mention the interweb pipes!
Amazon Kindle taking a swipe at Apple’s iPad
Interesting that Amazon feels the need to have a go at them - especially as Amazon also has an iPad and iPhone app!
It’s a good angle to go on though for Amazon. Their e-ink does work well in full sunlight. (Except, I wonder who reads in full sunlight anyway? Even a white paper page is hard to read in full sunlight.)
I guess Apple could now do an ad showing a Kindle user trying to read in a darkened room at night (a more likely scenario, IMHO). To spice up their ad they could have the Kindle reader wearing a head lamp or one of those clip-on Kindle accessories!).
It’s all good!

“Consumers didn’t ask for tablets” - Forrester Research
When I read a piece of “research” like this from the so-called experts (eg Gartner, Forrester, and the like) I am just reminded how disconnected these research houses are from reality.
They remind me of academics telling business people just “how things are in business”…
So back to this article. They’re saying it’s impossible for Apple to sell any more than a total of 3.5 million iPads because, “consumers didn’t ask for tablets”. Seriously. Did we ask for iPhones? Or iPods? Or iAnything? Anyway because we didn’t ask for such new tech innovations, somehow magically we just won’t buy them. Hello?! What planet are you “researchers” on?
Luckily Apple or Google or even Microsoft for that matter are probably not listening too carefully to your predictions. Especially Apple, since they have already sold 3 million iPads in the last 80 days. Yep Forrester, only 500,000 more will be sold for the rest of the year. Oh wait, you probably didn’t tell us consumers not to buy them.

iReading in the bath is now possible
I knew sooner or later someone would design this. Reading in the bath is one of life’s sacred pleasures. But the prospect of dosing off and letting your $500 iPad slip out of your fingers while you’re reading eTolstoy isn’t something most people would risk. TuneWear to the rescue!

Wired Sells 24,000 iPad Apps in One Day
So, this is the geeks mag. Now without trees involved.
Only problem is the 500meg download each month. That’s half a gig folks. Never mind the download cost and time, what about the “disk” space each edition will take up on my iPad!? It’s just too big to make it a viable option each month, methinks. Plan B?
