The Internet? Bah! Hype alert: Why cyberspace isn’t, and will never be, nirvana

“The truth in no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works.” - Newsweek 1995 article.

This is brilliant. Classic stuff. Read the whole article!

Clifford Stoll: Why Web Won’t Be Nirvana - Newsweek

1995 and Newsweek predicts that the web won’t happen. It’s a pity they got it so wrong. Can I trust what they are writing today?

I think the Internet is the most dangerous thing invented since the atomic bomb. It’s destroyed the music business. It’s going to destroy the movie business.
John Cougar Mellencamp, Aug 2010. Personally, I think the record companies destroyed the music industry they created in the first place (the industry that was based on fat-cats inbetween the artist and the fan). Not the internet. It’s like saying vinyl destroyed live performances. It’s not the technology, it’s the business model. We’ve come a full circle now - artists are making more money from live performances than ever! Welcome to evolution Mr Mellencamp. I think he needs to cheer up a little, and be grateful some folks still download his music.

Internet Explorer Turns 15 - Makes me feel old!
Seriously, was it that long ago I first installed it? And before that I used Mosaic (I think I have an install of it on some floppy disks somewhere!). And before Mosaic I used Lynx in 1993. The first website I built had no images - just plain text, underlined links, inverse text and blink(!).
Now you tell that to the kids today and they won’t believe ya…

Did you Know 4.0

The Did you Know series has hit my inbox more than anything in the last few years. Some people are still circulating version 2.0 or version 3.0. I thought I’d push out a post to v 4.0 (even though it’s been around since Sep 2009, and we could be getting a new one soon.

Above all, when you redesign the website, I don’t want any HTML in it. I’m tired of dealing with all the hassles of HTML.

Anon. (via clientsfromhell)

Brilliant! I just love the thought of the web without HTML. So Zen.

OK, so why the zen bones thing?

About 20 years ago I stumbled upon a book called "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones". Being vegetarian - the "flesh" bit didn't grab me, but the short pithy Zen stories inside it, did.

Ever since then my web nick has been zenbones, my Hotmail, my Gmail address, you name it. It's kinda stuck.

Is the blog about Zen? Nope.
