I’ve watched this a few times this week in the run up to my first marathon as my motivation. This guy is 100 years old. Seriously. If you’re not dead by 100, you’re usually in a bed or a wheelchair, not running marathons. Respect, sir.

A flyover of my race today - 2011 Satori Camel 10 Miler (16.1km) in Noordhoek, Cape Town
Heard on air, Cape Talk
- Patient: The problem is that obesity runs in our family.
- Doctor: No, the problem is that no one runs in your family.
Vegetarian Shoes?
Since when do you get shoes “suitable for vegetarians?” Huh? Are they edible? I’m confused.
However, what’s not confusing at all is that Endless.com (owned by Amazon) are selling shoes with good price tags and they have FREE INTERNATIONAL DELIVERY.
So for example - I run with New Balance 1064’s which have a list price of $134 but sell for $77! That’s only R513 (ront) with free 2 day shipping. Here in South Africa you will pay between R800 and R1100 depending where you shop. So considering I’m on my 3rd pair of them after several thousands kms of road running in the last few years, maybe I should be buying them at Endless!
So now even the Pentagon has banned the military from using “5 Fingers”

She Might be down, but she’s not out!
What an unbelievable recovery! There’s just so many obvious lessons in this, I’m not sure where to start.

Last Sunday’s half marathon through the vineyards in Stellenbosch and Somerset West, as seen in helicopter view (and in 4 minutes, rather than the 2 hours 20mins I ran it in!)
I don’t know anyone who fuels so much during a run. I wonder how accurate this is?
I know, I said this at the start of 2010, and I didn’t do it.
I ran plenty of half marathons and almost 30km, but never a 42km. (Shin splints, excuses, shin splints, yada yada, excuses excuses!)
So right now I am committing to doing a full marathon in 2011.
What challenging thing are you going to do this year?
Need some help? http://www.moninavelarde.com/newyears/ ?
Watch the video, and be stunned… even Oprah has run a marathon!

How did I not know about GWB running a marathon?
And how did I not know he’s a lot faster than I am?
Why am I so depressed about this?”

My typical conversation with non-runner
- Non-runner: Oh, so you're a runner?
- Me: Yes. I do half-marathon distance.
- Non-runner: So have you done the Two Oceans Marathon?
- Me: Yes, but only the half marathon, not the Ultra.
- Non-runner: Oh. Isn't that the same thing, just further?
- Me: Er... ja.
- Non-runner: Oh, like the Comrades! I have a friend/uncle/brother who has done the Comrades. Have you done the Comrades?
- Me: No. That's an Ultra Marathon - it's 90km long!
- Non-runner: Sure. But it's the same thing really. Just longer.
- Me: Ja. OK. Sure. Just longer.
I just can’t get enough of the Cliff Young story
Every few months I find myself telling someone about him - and I find myself loving his story all over again.
In 1983, at the age of 61, Cliff Young, a country-bumpkin potato farmer, ran non-stop from Sydney to Melbourne (that’s 875 kms!!).
He arrived at the starting line in overalls and gumboots having never run a competitive race in his life! Not only did he finish the distance in 5 days and 15 hours, but won the race!
What a legend!
